Linda Goodwin (aka Angus) is a metalsmith, who lives and works in Ōhinehou/ Lyttelton. She grew up next to a coal mine in the foothills of the Takitimu mountain range in Southland. Her mother was a sheep farmer, loved music, and encouraged the arts rather than toys (we had none). Angus always loved fine detail (she sketched and was the certificate writer at school), always wanted to be a jeweller, but there were no apprenticeship opportunities when she left school. She travelled the world and returned home to gain a Batchelor of Arts in Psychology & Education at the University of Canterbury, and a Masters of Social Science with First Class Honours at the University of Waikato. Angus’s studies focused on operationalising Te Tiriti o Waitangi within the context of public health and community development. For over 20 years, she dedicated her learnings to work with Māori with a focus on improving whānau wellbeing.

It was the Canterbury earthquakes that changed her direction, and in 2016 Angus completed a Certificate in Contemporary Jewellery under the tutelage of Katrina Brehaut and Monique Connell at Hagley College, Christchurch. She joined the Silversmiths’ Guild of Canterbury and participated in a string of local exhibitions, winning the ‘Malvern Business Merit Award’ at the Darfield Artweek in 2021 and ‘Peoples’ Choice Award’ for the Silversmiths’ Guild of Canterbury in the same year. Her work is now in several galleries including Oxford Gallery Toi o Waimakariri, and Pea Sea Art Gallery (Port Chalmers), and she is a member of the Rei Collective in Lyttelton.

‘I am inspired by our history, our environment & symbolism. I love creating functional and unique pieces of contemporary jewellery. Environmental responsibility and a focus on recycling materials guide my practice & life.’
